Before the fall of 2011, I would have described my taste in music to be pretty bland and not very diverse. I listened mostly to modern country, with some rap sprinkled in here and there. Now of course growing up I listened to the big legends like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, but I thought good music like that was gone.
In 2011 a good friend of mine went to the Bonnaroo Music & Arts festival in Manchester, TN and came back raving about the time he had. I especially remember him telling me about the Pretty Lights sunrise set and I was instantly intrigued. I looked up tour dates and saw that the closest Pretty Lights was coming to my hometown of Buffalo, NY, was a five-hour car drive away, but luckily we were able to take the trip!
The concert was held in Columbus, Ohio at the LC Pavilion on September 30th, 2011. The venue has an indoor stage and an outdoor stage and despite it being a little chilly and raining, Pretty lights wanted the show to be held outside. Prior to this show I had only heard one song by Pretty Lights, so I basically went in blind, with no idea what I was in for.
Pretty Lights opened with his popular track “I Know The Truth” and I was instantly hooked. Throughout the night he dropped remixes of some of my favorite songs growing up, including a remix to Pink Floyd’s “Time” which completely blew my mind. The lights were something special as well. I had never been to a show with such an elaborate light setup and it truly was beautiful.
It was a perfect night of music and, despite the weather, the crowd came out and had a great time. This was one of the best crowds I have ever been a part of. After that night, I went home and started planning my very first festival: Bonnaroo!! If it wasn’t for this Pretty Lights show, I would never have started diving into different genres of music and experienced all the great new music that is being made!
