Festival season is almost upon us! Being dubbed as the “Canadian Bonnaroo”, AC Entertainment has revealed the 2016 lineup for the WayHome festival. The festival takes place on the Burl’s Creek Event Grounds in Oro-Medonte, Ontario. This is about an hour drive north of Toronto. The festival leans harder on the indie/alt rock genre but also features some hip/hop and electronic artists. Also WayHome likes to showcase some of the best talent Canada has to offer. This year WayHome came out swinging with one of the best set of headliners this festival season has to offer with LCD Soundsystem, Arcade Fire, and The Killers. Let’s dive into undercard a bit and see who I am most excited for this year outside of the headliners.
5.) GoldLink – GoldLink is a rapper from Virginia. I became familiar with him after the Bonnaroo lineup was released and I can’t stop listening to him. I really enjoy his flow and delivery and his beats are very fresh. Not your flavor of the month type of rapper. He calls his sound future bounce, which after listening to his hit “Spectrum” you can see why. His set will be a big dance party and I can not wait!
4.) Gary Clark Jr. – This won’t be my first time seeing Gary Clark Jr., and definitely not my last. He is one the most talented guitarist out there today no questions asked. I have no doubt that this will be on the most talked about shows of the festival. With smooth R&B jams like “Blak and Blu” or bluesy rock hit “Bright Lights”, Gary Clark Jr. always delivers a great show! Don’t miss your chance to see a legend in the making!
3.) The Last Shadow Puppets – If you don’t know who this is stop what you’re doing and look them up. This is an English American rock supergroup consisting of Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys), Miles Kane (The Rascals), James Ford (Simian Mobile Disco), and Zach Dawes (Mini Mansions) and they rock. Anything that involves Alex Turner has me sold!
2.) The Arcs – Another side project that WayHome has landed is The Arcs lead by The Black Keys front man Dan Auerbach. Their debut album was released this past September and I can’t get enough from this group! This is one of my most anticipated shows not only of this festival but of the summer!
1.) Ray Lamontagne – When I saw Ray Lamontagne’s name in the lineup, he instantly became my 1st must see act of the festival (outside of headliners). Currently he is being back by My Morning Jacket (minus Jim James), which only adds to the excitement of this set! He has a new album Ouroboros featuring My Morning Jacket and produced by Jim James is due out March 4th of this year. The debut single “Hey, No Pressure” has already been released and has been on my Spotify listening rotation ever since. I can’t wait to hear more from this album and hear it performed live this summer!
As previous mentioned, the festival takes place at Burl’s Creek Event Grounds. There are 4 stages as well as a silent disco that feature music from 1:00pm to 2:00am with the music ending at 11:00pm Sunday Night. WayHome offers V.I.P and General Admission camping with V.I.P starting at $599 and GA starting at $209 with the last tier price at $279. Note that these prices are in CAD. With the exchange rate how it currently sits, I fully expect lots of American festival goers to take advantage of this and make the trip. I personally can’t wait for this festival!
