Can you believe it is almost time for the fifth annual Suwannee Hulaween music festival in Live Oak, Florida? Seems like only yesterday people were either begging for the lineup on social media or threatening to sell their ticket if the lineup was not released. Well, one thing is for certain, I can remember the excitement that overcame me while I was sitting in our camp at Electric Forest when the initial lineup was dropped. There isn’t a greater feeling than being at an awesome festival with an incredible lineup and seeing that you have another amazing, stacked festival lined up.
Who wouldn’t be excited with a lineup featuring: Three nights of The String Cheese Incident (SCI), Bassnectar, Ween, Griz, Run the Jewels, Nick Murphy (a.k.a. Chet Faker), RL Grime, Portugal. The Man, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, The Disco Biscuits, Claude Vonstroke, Vince Staples, and many, many more. Plus this is only the initial lineup with one more wave of artists left to be announced closer to the event. With so many incredible artists, we are only going to touch on a few that I want to stress as do not miss sets: Portugal. The Man (PTM), Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires (CBHE), Spafford, & Poolside.
Alaska native’s PTM started off 2017 playing a memorable set at this year’s Shaky Knees (Atlanta) and then carried that momentum like a juggernaut onto Bonnaroo and many other festivals during this summer. If you have not heard any of PTM before, check out their Official Soundcloud page for all of their LPs including their latest, Woodstock featuring their hit single, “Feel It Still”.
If you have ever seen “The Screaming Eagle” of soul Mr. Charles Bradley, then you would know he is a do not miss every single time you get a chance to see this man perform. Sorry not sorry but he is truly that damn good. I had the honor most recently at the Sloss Music & Arts Festival (Birmingham) to do photo for his unforgettable set and I cannot wait to do it again. Check out his Official Soundcloud page if you have yet to listen to the greatness that is Mr. Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires.
Arizona’s very own Spafford was one of the first artists that were rumored then turned into a confirmation earlier this year. And according to Live For Live Music.com, Spafford might just be the best jam band you have not heard of yet. Curious? Then check out Spafford’s Official Soundcloud page to see what all the fuss is about.
Now let’s talk about Filip Nikolic & Jeff Paradise a.k.a. Poolside which is an L.A. based electronic duo that has a sound that is often described as “Daytime Disco” by their fan base. Their chill, dance vibe is just what the doctor ordered for a spontaneous Hulaween dance party. I had a blast checking them out at the now defunct Fun Fun Fun Fest (2013) in Austin, Texas. Check out their Official Soundcloud page if you are curious as to their music. Do not make the mistake and sleep on these guys, you have been warned.
With the second wave of artists still to be announced, the speculation of who will be added next is intensifying the closer we get to October. STS9, The Floozies, G Jones, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Khurangbin, Turkuaz, Lotus, and Sunsquabi would all be excellent additions to this year’s already super charged lineup.
