Boombox: Live at Variety Playhouse (2019)
Back in 2004, Zion Godchaux and Russ Randolph formed BoomBox while living in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Russ would later leave the band in 2017 and would be replaced by DJ Harry. BoomBox quickly became a fan favorite to see live with their style of groovy house/funk/psychedelic/blues/rock. Whether you are listening to something off their debut LP, Visions of Backbeat, or their latest release, Western Voodoo, their music just gets you in a great mood. And listening to music that makes you happy is what it is all about in the long run. So something new has transpired during this tour for the band BoomBox. A new DJ has taken the proverbial ‘wheels of steel’ and his name is Kinsman MacKay (Zion’s brother). Let me tell you, from a fan, that having Kinsman on board has not taken away from BoomBox’s live performance. In fact, it almost feels enhanced with some fresh blood taking the reins of the DJ’s role. Don’t believe me? Then check out the announced tour dates below for BoomBox’s tour, and see which date is close for you and your crew:

Here is a little tidbit of information about Zion and Kinsman’s parents: Keith Godchaux and Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay. Both played for The Grateful Dead. Yes, that Grateful Dead. Donna was a vocalist and Keith played keyboards with The Grateful Dead after to moving to California in 1970. So it all makes perfect sense that they do a cover of “Shakedown Street” now. I would be remiss if I did not add that Donna has been inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame as well. What an honor! So it is easy to see and understand that music has run in the veins of BoomBox since Day 1. And you can always expect them to tear the roof off of any party that they are playing at. The supporting act for BoomBox was local DJ Josh Powell, A.K.A. Double Nil. Since he was the opening support, the venue had not filled up and his set did not get the respect that it deserved. Double Nil played some great house music to get the crowd amped up for the sounds of BoomBox. By the end of his set the venue started to fill and the dance floor was getting crowded. If you ever have the chance to see Double Nil live, whether as opening support or as a standalone act, I highly recommend making that trip to see him. Check out the Official Soundcloud page for Double Nil and hear for yourself some of his tracks today.
