Flying Lotus: Live at Variety Playhouse (SOLD OUT!)

Flying Lotus, whose real name is Steven Ellison, just stopped by Variety Playhouse with Brandon Coleman Spacetalker, Salami Rose Joe Louis, and PBDY in support of his sixth (6th) LP, Flamagra, off Warp Records. This was my first time catching Flying Lotus (a.k.a. Fly Lo), so I was not sure what to expect (except a really good time) from his performance during this tour stop at the Variety Playhouse. Especially since Fly Lo had the assistance from a pioneering technology company named 3D Live who augments his performance with a live stage show named “Ghost Tile”. Upon entry into the venue, each person attending was given specially marked 3D glasses just for this event. I know that I will be seeing Fly Lo again later this year at Hulaween but pretty sure that that set will be sans 3D Live. So keep in mind that your only chance to see this tour are the few remaining dates left. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

PBDY (pronounced P-Body) is a LA-based DJ, producer, and founder of TAR (a LA-based label) that has been catching the attention of a lot of music critics and fans alike while on tour with Flying Lotus. He definitely got the party going for everyone who showed up early for this event. Want to check out some of PBDY’s music? Follow this link to check out their Official Soundcloud page today.

Salami Rose Joe Louis is another Brainfeeder’s artist based in the Bay Area who is a composer, musician, producer, and planetary scientist. She released a single, “Nostalgic Montage” as a little appetizer before she releases her debut LP. To be honest, I did not know what to expect from her set but let me tell you that my jaw dropped from the beginning. Not taking anything away from PBDY, Brandon Coleman, or Fly Lo’s performance but Salami Rose’s set was magical! I am not saying this was my favorite performance from this night but it was pretty damn close to it. Want to check out some of Salami Rose Joe’s music? Brandon Coleman Spacetalker is signed to Brainfeeder (which the label owned by Flying Lotus) and has released Resistance (09/14/2018) which is considered a true funk odyssey by the musical virtuoso. Not to mention that Brandon’s vocals live sounds as smooth as Stevie Wonder as he belts out some of his most notable tracks from his discography. Flying Lotus, whose real name is Steven Ellison, is a LA-based DJ, filmmaker, musician, founder of the label Brainfeeder, rapper, and an American recorder producer. Tonight he came out on stage to a roaring crowd who really made him feel at home. It was time for Fly Lo to melt the minds of everyone in attendance. Sitting high in his throne, Fly Lo kicked off the evening with “Getting There” as the crowd went wild. Other notable tracks played during his set; “The Killing Joke”, “Wesley’s Theory”, “Do the Astral Plane”, and “Friend Zone”. Between Fly Lo’s unique discography, 3D Live’s stage show constantly playing in the background, or the ever present chill vibe that permeated throughout the Variety Playhouse this was truly a night that many people will always remember. There is a reason why this show was sold out. Want to check out some of Fly Lo’s music? Follow this link to check out their Official Soundcloud page today.
