Temporary Spaces North American Tour: Pallbearer w/ Rwake and The Keening Live at The Masquerade

On March 22nd, Pallbearer made a huge touring announcement in support of their brand new album, Mind Burns Alive, when they posted the dates for their Temporary Spaces North American Tour starting June 6th in Memphis, Tennessee, and concluding August 3rd in Houston, Texas. Pallbearer also announced joining them on the Temporary Spaces North American Tour for opening support would be a mixture of REZN, Inter Arma, Rwake, and The Keening. A few days after the start of this tour, Pallbearer (with opening support from Rwake and The Keening) made a stop to perform on their Temporary Spaces North American Tour at The Masquerade in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. On a clear and warm Summer night, fans packed the area called Hell at The Masquerade ready to have a great time listening to some great tunes by Pallbearer, Rwake, and The Keening.

The Keening is the solo music project of Rebecca Vernon (vocals/guitar) formerly of the now defunct Salt Lake City, Utah doom/sludge/stoner metal band SubRosa. For the live shows, The Keening consists of Vernon (vocals/guitar), Andrea Morgan (violin), Nate Carson (drums), Bill Anderson (bass), and Christy Cather (guitar). Granted this venture with The Keening is very different from the approach that SubRosa took with their style of music. The Keening brilliantly mixes enchanting vocals from Vernon with a unique blend of folk, metal, and country influences. While doing some research on The Keening,

I was thrilled they were billed to perform their album Little Bird at the Roadburn Festival on the main stage on April 20, 2025, in Tilburg, The Netherlands. That festival has always been on my bucket list, so I am always happy to see artists who can perform at such a prestigious event. I was excited to see what The Keening had to offer us since this would be my first time seeing them live. And they did not disappoint one bit. The crowd let The Keening know between songs how much they appreciated them as well. It was great to finally watch The Keening performing live and witness the spectacle of their live performance. As mentioned earlier, I can only imagine how intense and unforgettable the Roadburn Festival performance of their album Little Bird will be next year.

Check out the setlist from The Keening’s performance at The Masquerade (06/09/2024):

·         “Autumn”

·         “Eden”

·         “Little Bird”

·         “Hunter II”

You can support The Keening through their official Bandcamp or Merchandise page.

Rwake is a legendary sludge/doom metal/experimental band from Little Rock, Arkansas that formed in 1996. Rwake consists of Chris “C.T.” Terry (vocals), Jeff Morgan (drums/samples), Reid Raley (bass), Austin Sublett (guitar), Brittany “The B” Fugate (Moog/synth/vocals), & John Judkins (bass/pedal steel). Rwake has released five (5) LPs, one (1) Demo, one (1) Split, one (1) single, and one (1) Live album. Like The Keening, this would be my first time seeing Rwake perform live, and I was eager to hear them perform some songs like “Stratos”, “Sight Beyond Sight”, “Souls of the Sky”, and “The Culling”.

For those who have followed my column over the years, you know I love slow, grimey sludge metal bands, so Rwake has been a band I have wanted to see for some time now. Mission accomplished thanks to Pallbearer. To our surprise, we were treated to some brand-new tracks from their forthcoming album! Rwake in Atlanta debuted some fantastic new tracks, and I cannot wait for the new album to get released. Stay tuned to Rwake’s official Bandcamp for more information regarding a date for their brand new release and stop by the merchandise tab to support them.

Here is a look at Rwake’s setlist from their show at The Masquerade on 06/09/2024:

·         “With Stardust Flowers”

·         “The Return of Magik”

·         “You Swore We’d Always Be Together”

·         “Crooked Rivers”

Pallbearer is a four-piece doom metal band from Little Rock, AR that formed in 2008. Pallbearer consists of Brett Campbell (guitar/synthesizer/lead vocals), Joseph D. Rowland (bass/lead and backing vocals/electric and acoustic piano/synthesizer), Devin Holt (guitar/backing vocals), and Mark Lierly (drums). They have released five (5) LPs and two (2) EPs with Mind Burns Alive being the latest release. I have been lucky enough to have seen several times, including their electric, mind-melting 2015 set at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival.

Closing out the night, Pallbearer started their set with a phenomenal track from their fourth (4) album Forgotten Days titled “Silver Wings”. The evolution of Pallbearer has been a wonderful ride through their sonic expressions of complex emotions ranging between pain, grief, love, and hope. This evening, we were treated to four new songs from Mind Burns Alive; “Mind Burns Alive”, “Where The Light Fades”, “Signals”, “With Disease”, and “Endless Place”. All superb tracks from the new album Mind Burns Alive and even better songs live as Pallbearer seamlessly performed these songs for their fans at The Masquerade. It was great to see Pallbearer again happily performing live in Atlanta, and I could tell the crowd was just as excited as they played through their riff-filled set in Hell at The Masquerade.

Check out Pallbearer’s thunderous setlist from this evening’s performance in Atlanta:

·         “Silver Wings”
