Boris: Dear / 25th Anniversary Tour

A little over a year ago, the Japanese avant-garde metal trio, Boris, came to play The Masquerade on their Pink Tour. That show was my very first photographer assignment for Concerthopper.com. When I saw that they would come back to play The Masquerade while on their Dear / 25th Anniversary tour, I jumped at this opportunity again! Needless to say, Boris is one of my favorite artistic bands but then add Mutoid Man into the mix and you get a very solid lineup that I was not missing.

The Japanese experimental collective, Endon, opened up the night with a brilliant performance highlighting their unique style mixed with hard core, black metal, industrial, grind core, and noise. Endon could just possibly be correctly labeled as “The Most Extreme Band in Tokyo” based on their opening set filled with brooding noise tracks and destruction to equipment off the stage. Check out Endon on their official Bandcamp page to hear some of their discography.

Mutoid Man is a progressive metal/metalcore/hard rock trio from Brooklyn, New York that has been on my must see list for some time now. Made up of Stephen Brodsky (lead vocals/guitar/ formerly of Converge, member of Cave In and Kid Kilowatt), Ben Koller (drummer/ member of Converge, Killer Be Killed, & Cave In), and Nick Cageao (bass), Mutoid Man was just a thought between Ben and Stephen while fooling around with some tracks back in 2012. Check out their official Bandcamp page to hear some of their music.

Boris first stepped onto the music scene in 1992 and have released twenty-four incredible (24) LPs since. What I really respect about Boris is that they refuse to be labeled as any one kind of musical genre. They maintain that by steering away from being pigeon-holed as a metal band or a sludge metal band, they are able to create what they want and that is a true form of art. Want to hear some of Boris? Check out their official Bandcamp page today, I recommend Pink, Noise, and Heavy Rocks as a start.
