Elder, Ruby the Hatchet, & Dreadnought: Live at The Earl
Elder made their triumphant return to Atlanta with special guests Ruby the Hatchet and Dreadnought as opening support for their riveting performance at The Earl. This is their first North American tour since 2018 when they toured the West Coast/Mexico with Serial Hawk. I have followed this band since first stumbling upon them after their second LP, Dead Roots Stirring. To listen to their progression over the years has been a delight. Elder was on my bucket list to do photography at one of their shows and just to see them perform live. Once I knew they were coming to the Earl, I knew I had to step out a bit from my comfort zone by taking photos in a smaller, more intimate venue. I was determined not to miss this opportunity with Elder!
Dreadnought is a progressive metal band that hails from Denver, CO, and consists of Kelly Schilling (vocals/guitar), Lauren Vieira (vocals/keyboards), Scottie Anning (guitars), Kevin Handlon (bass), Jordan Clancy (drums). They released five (5) LPs since forming as a band in 2012. Currently, they are on tour with Elder in support of their latest, The Endless, which is being released on digital platforms and CD on August 26th and will be released on vinyl in late September/early October. This band is definitely one you do not want to sleep on. Trust me! You can easily listen to and presale the new LP by Dreadnought by following this link to their Official Bandcamp page!
Check out their set list from this night below:
· “Worlds Break”
· “Midnight Moon”

Ruby the Hatchet first formed in New Jersey in 2010 but relocated to Philadelphia, PA where they now reside. The band consists of Jillian Taylor (vocals), Johnny Scarps (guitar), Mike Parise (bass), Sean Hur (keyboards), and Owen Stewart (drums). To date, they have released three (3) LPs, one (1) EP, one (1) 7” single, and have been featured on one (1) compilation. The band recently signed to Magnetic Eye Records (September 2, 2021) and has recently announced their fourth (4) studio album, Fear is a Cruel Master, due out October 21, 2022. Most of this night’s set was taken from the new album, so we were in for a major treat! This was my second time catching Ruby the Hatchet in Atlanta (2015 tour with Uncle Acid and the deadbeats, and just like the last time, they played a spirited and energetic set that really got the crowd excited.
Check out Ruby the Hatchet’s set list below:

Elder is originally from Boston, MA, and consists of Nick DiSalvo (vocals/guitars), Jack Donovan (bass), Mike Risberg (guitar/keyboards), and Georg Edert (drums). Since 2006, they have released five (5) LPs, two (2) demos, one (1) split, two (2) EP, one (1) live LP, and one (1) LP collaboration with the German band Kadavar under the name ELDOVAR. Not going to lie, I own everything on vinyl except the live LP, Elder: Live at Roadburn (and this will soon be in my collection). The evolution of Elder from their humble beginnings to the sonic juggernaut they have become is a testament to musical maturity. They are well on their way to becoming one of the most talented progressive rock bands to ever crank an amp.
What can I say except I really love this band through and through. Personally, I cannot wait to see Elder play live again (whether doing photography or just chilling in the crowd)! If you have never listened to Elder before, it’s not too late. Follow this link to check out Elder for yourself over at their Official Bandcamp page! You have time to check this incredible tour out until September 10th when they play their stomping grounds in Boston, MA at the Middle East.
