Khruangbin w/ Will Van Horn: Winter Tour 2018

Khruangbin is a Houston based trio that has quickly become one of my favorite new bands after witnessing them with all their glory at Electric Forest (Weekend 1 - 2017) with my festie crew. The band consists of Laura Lee (bass), Mark Speer (guitar), and Donald “DJ” Johnson (drums). You may ask yourself what their name means. Fun fact: Before their very first gig, Laura was learning Thai and wanted to use her favorite Thai word “khruangbin”, (เครื่องบิน) which means “flying engine” or “aeroplane” as their name. The rest you can say was history.

I thought Khruangbin’s debut LP, The Universe Smiles Upon You (2015), was incredible from start to finish but then they released Con Todo El Mundo earlier this year. You should understand by now that this band is going to be around for a long time making some beautiful music. You can easily hear a global melting pot of influences in their sound culling from aspects of Thai, Spanish, and the Middle Eastern flavors. On tour with Khruangbin was another Houston native named Will Van Horn. Will is known for his masterful skills playing the pedal steel guitar and creating some really smooth, enchanting tunes that included a dreamy cover of Aphex Twin’s “Avril 14”. You can check out his video to “Lost My Mind” which is off his debut EP, Pedal Steel Guitar.

Discover Khruangbin’s music over on their Official Soundcloud page or at Apple music today! Also check out Will Van Horn’s  Official Bandcamp page and listen to his debut EP. Check out the set list from their show at Variety Playhouse in Atlanta below:
