Top Ten Best Bites at Suwannee Hulaween 2019
Suwannee Hulaween just concluded its sixth year at Spirit of Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida over the weekend of October 24-27. This annual music and arts festival is hosted by The String Cheese Incident and brings together some of the most talents musicians across a variety of genres, witty cirque performers, out of this world lighting designers, and jaw dropping interactive artists for a four day weekend of indescribable experiences. Curators also host some of the most popular craft food and beverage vendors onsite for the weekend to feed the masses. Here is our Top 10 Food Vendors from Suwannee Hulaween 2019:
1. Outback Kate’s - 4.97 - Outback Kate’s was located on the main vendor row at the top of the hill in the Meadow and their creole inspired cuisine did not disappoint at all. They are most famous for their Bourbon Chicken and their Black Lemonade. When we stopped by we were looking for something quick and filling so we went with the Dirty Mac n’ Cheese with a Black Lemonade. The Black Lemonade is fresh squeezed lemonade with ginseng, pomegranate, raspberries, blueberries. The Dirty Mac n’ Cheese is a thick and cheesey mac n’ cheese with a slight kick from a creole / cajun seasoning. These two items together were more than filling and refreshing to fuel up and stay on your feet for the rest of the day. The only thing I would have changed about my order is adding the Bourbon Chicken to my Mac n’ Cheese the next time around. Oh, and once you’ve had the Black Lemonade, you will definitely be back for more. It was the most refreshing drink I was able to get my hands on at Hulaween 2019. Don’t forget the hushpuppy if you stop by their both - you may want to add an extra!
2. Umami Bites - 4.86 - Umami Bite’s was located in the Meadow area near the shortcut to the Patch Stage and served up delicious plates inspired by the best Asian cuisines. Their most popular items are their Wonton Tacos and they are absolutely out of this world. Our personal favorite is the Chicken Wonton Taco. It is a crispy wonton shell filled with a cheesy chicken blend with fresh pico and hot sauce. Once you have a Wonton Taco you will never look at tacos the same.
3. Solar Cafe - 4.75 - Solar Cafe was located in the main vendor row in the Meadow and served up delicious vegan and vegetarian dishes all weekend along with a selection of coffee. I had the opportunity to stop by their booth and try one of their crepes. Their crepes are made to order so it is definitely not something you would want to grab if you’re in a hurry to make it to your next set. However, the extra time is well worth the wait when the crepe is piping hot and in your hands. We tried the Blueberry Hill which had fresh blueberries, Nutella, bananas, whipped cream and cinnamon. It was the perfect treat for a sweet tooth!
4. King of Pops - 4.67 - As always, King of Pops could be found with their pop-carts strategically placed throughout the main venue areas. King of Pops offers a variety of handcrafted popsicles made from a variety of fresh ingredients. This Atlanta-based company can be found all over the Music Festival scene slinging their handcrafted pops from three to four carts inside the venue. They are always reasonably priced as well ranging from $4 to $5 depending on where you catch them. At Hulaween, their pops are $4 and our favorite from this year’s event is the Cookies n’ Cream. The term Cookies n’ Cream makes you think about milk and oreos, but King of Pops sticks a giant handcrafted chocolate chip cookie inside a milk based pop. The cookie stays perfectly chewy and soft inside the pop. Its an amazing quick grab for a sweet treat and we highly recommend checking them out for a quick refreshment in between sets.
5. Tica’s Tacos - 4.50 - Tica’s is a festival food vendor that offers a variety of festival fair but for Hulaween they showed up and showed out with their Tica’s Tacos booth. The Tica’s Tacos booth was located in the Meadow in the vendor row near the Ferris wheel. Tica’s Tacos slings a variety of fresh tacos and burritos, but we went straight for the Queso Fries. Tica’s Queso Fries are a bed of crispy waffle fries smothered in a slightly spicy cheese sauce. We say slightly spicy just because it has the tiniest kick at the end that we almost didn’t even notice. We honestly went for the Queso Fries because we have been at festivals where they sold out early. Honestly, now we see what all the fuss is about. These are next level Queso Fries and if you ever see Tica’s Tacos at a festival it is definitely worth the money!
6. Humpty’s Dumplings - 4.46 - Humpty’s Dumplings was located near the Patch Stage and they were slinging their “deep fried orgasms” all weekend long! Humpty’s Dumplings started from their owners having a late night out at a bar and they wrapped some rotisserie chicken in Wonton wrappers and deep fried them. The rest was history and they began brainstorming on the many different ways they could bring these Wonton wrappers to to life through a variety of different flavors. Our personal favorites are the Buffalo Chicken, Strawberry Cheesecake, and Honey Chipotle Chicken. They let you mix and match your basket of dumplings so we highly suggest mixing up your flavors and trying both their sweet and savory dumplings.
7. Pizza Emporium - 4.40 - Pizza Emporium has become a staple for Music and Arts Festivals hosted at Spirit of Suwannee Music Park. These guys can be found at most festivals here slinging their huge hand tossed slices of pie. Pizza Emporium was located in the main vendor row in the Meadow and they definitely had one of the longest lines consistently throughout the weekend. If you ever see Pizza Emporium at a festival, you should definitely try and stop by their booth if you’re up around breakfast time to see if they have their elusive, most creative pies available. They offer a Biscuits n’ Gravy pie as well as a Chicken n’ Waffles pie occasionally. Throughout the rest of the weekend they offer a stellar spaghetti n’ meatballs pizza, out of this world Buffalo Chicken pizza, and traditional pepperoni pizzas that will knock your socks off. If you and your squad are all hungry, you could pool your money and get a whole pie to take back to your camp for a feast!
8. Shady Grove Wraps - 4.23 - Shady Grove Wraps was located outside the Patch Stage near 80 acres and they were slinging their delicious wraps all weekend. This is our go-to spot for an out of this world breakfast burrito. It never ceases to amaze me how perfectly crispy their bacon is and they perfectly cook their eggs - nothing too runny! They also offer an amazing variety of vegetarian options like wraps and salads. They are the perfect stop for anyone camped out in 80 acres for breakfast in the morning or a quick lunch on your way into the venue.
9. Spontaneous Consumption - 4.15 - Spontaneous Consumption is another vendor that has been curated in the campground area and they are serving up absolutely delicious plates all day, all weekend. They serve up some classic food truck combinations like Burgers, Chicken Sandwiches, BBQ Sandwiches, and Loaded Baked Potatoes. Their Loaded Baked Potatoes are out of this world! Their Potatoes are loaded and piled high with butter, sour cream, bacon, cheese, green onions, and BBQ. These bad boys come in at a whopping one pound. They are without a doubt one of the most bang for your buck food trucks onsite at Suwannee Hulaween. There’s no way you will leave still hungry after smashing one of their giant 1 pound potatoes.
10. Gouda Boys - 3.58 - The Gouda Boys were on the main vendor row in their usual spot at the far end. Gouda Boys have become a staple in the festival scene with their Gangsta Eggrolls, Gansta Steaks, and Gangsta Wings. All of their Gangsta Steaks come with a hefty helping of their smoked gouda mac n’ cheese. You can also get a Royale Mac N’ Cheese that comes with your choice of brisket, pork, chicken, or bacon. At Suwannee Hulaween this year, we were surprised to see them offering a variety of milkshakes as well since we had never seen them offer any dessert items at previous festivals. Though we didn’t have the opportunity to try one of their milkshakes at this event. their mac n’ cheese did not disappoint as a quick snack in between sets.
If you didn’t have the opportunity to try one of these out of this world craft food vendors, you can definitely find them circling the festival scene. We highly recommend stopping by and trying and of the food vendors we listed above.
