The Motet & Dopapod: Live at the Variety Playhouse

The Motet was formed back in 1998 by current drummer and bandleader Dave Watts and has continued to push forward into 2017 creating new material. Their unique blend of afrobeat, jazz, jam, funk, and R&B has been vital to their longtime success in the music industry. With the addition of Lyle Divinsky as their lead singer back in 2016, they only bolstered an already solid lineup with his vocal prowess. When I heard that they would tour with Dopapod as their opening support, I jumped at the chance to do this amazing show. The tour stopped off at a lovely venue, The Variety Playhouse,  that has recently re-opened after some renovations and located in the area known as Little 5 Points in Atlanta.

Boston based band Dopapod has released five studio LPs, including their latest release Megagem this past October. They have come a long way since their humble beginnings back in college playing basement parties and cultivating their fan base. This was my first time seeing Dopapod and now I wish seen them beforehand. It is known that the band plans to take a break in 2018 to recoup after playing non-stop for the last seven years. With the being said, I am very glad to have made this tour just in time to see them before their well-deserved break.

The Motet has certainly paid their dues over the last nineteen years touring the world playing venue after venue in front of so many fans. The last time we saw these guys, it was during the first weekend of Electric Forest. They played two sets that weekend and finished up on Saturday with a cover set that spanned decades of classic R&B, pop, and dance/funk hits. Needless to say, The Motet is one of my favorite bands to catch based on their energetic shows that brings together everyone in the audience under one groove! It was great to catch both of these bands on the last night of this tour before they both went home to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday with their families.
